Why is weight the determining factor when measuring Benadryl dosage for dogs or cats?
There are many pre-determined formulas that were made for many specific animals, including humans, to measure the amount of a drug, based on the area of the animal’s body mass. These formulas are based on how many milligrams of a drug, should be present in one area of the body to help fight against illness, viruses, bacteria, etc.
The measurement of dosage represents the acceptable amount of medicine that the body will accept to have the medicine work properly without the risk of side effects or overdose. The medicine is measured by the weight of a patient, as two patients of the same age can both be of a different body type and weight, which could potentially make one patient susceptible to side effects or overdose. As this was a possibility, it was agreed upon that medicines should be measured out in the dosage to accommodate the weight of a patient, as weight has more common ground with body mass than age does.
